Giant Steps - John Coltrane (Transcription)
I know there's a ton of transcriptions of this floating around the internet, but I wanted to do my own simply for the practice. Giant Steps by John Coltrane was revolutionary when it first came out in 1960. Learning to improvise over the chords in this tune is considered by many to be a rite of passage in the jazz world, because of their complexity and the fact that it modulates between three keys a major 3rd apart. The chord changes have come to be known colloquially as "Coltrane Changes", and have been used as the basis for many tunes in modern jazz. If there was ever an example of "shredding" in jazz, I would say this is it. There are a ton of awesome patterns to steal from this solo and build upon for use in your own improvisations.
I take commissions for transcription work. I'll transcribe almost any instrument (or multiple instruments) for you, and I can provide you with sheet music, tab, or both in many formats including PDF, XML, Sibelius, Guitar Pro, Power Tab, Muse Score, and almost any image format.
